WagerMinds Game Detail

Current Performance:

Vanderbilt enters tonight’s matchup ranked 20th in the polls in which they are sitting at 3-1 SU while going 2-1 ATS. The Commodores pulled off a 7 point win against NC State to reach the championship game.

Oregon State has been a bit of a surprise through the first four games going 4-0 SU while going 1-0-1 ATS so far. Oregon State earned a trip to the finals in this tournament by knocking off Texas in overtime by 5 points as a 5.5 point underdog.

Game Analysis:

Vanderbilt came into this season ranked in the preseason top 10 rankings while picked to finish 2nd in the SEC behind Kentucky since they have all 5 starters back from a team that finished with 23 wins last season. Expectations are still high at Vanderbilt even though they lost to Cleveland State by 13 in the second game of the season.

Vanderbilt is led by junior guard John Jenkins (23 PPG, 2.3 RPG) who was first-team All-SEC last season. Joining Jenkins on the court is senior guard Brad Tinsley (11.5 PPG, 2.8 APG), senior forward Lance Goulbourne (10.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG while shooting 60.9% from field), senior forward Jeffery Taylor (15.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 3.0 APG) and senior Forward Steve Tchlengang (5.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG). Coming off the bench for this Commodores squad adding some depth to this Vanderbilt team will be: freshman guard Kendren Johnson, sophomore guard Kyle Fuller, sophomore forward Ron Odom, freshman guard Dai-Jon Parker and freshman center Josh Henderson.

Oregon State entered this season with expectations not real high considering they have just one senior on this team and a large group of sophomores and juniors that returns to a team that won just 11 games all of last season. The Beavers though have shocked many people by starting 4-0 considering they did not win their fourth game last season until the middle of December.

Oregon State is led by junior guard Jared Cunningham (26.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG and 2.2 Steals per Game) who seems to be having gained the discipline and consistency that Coach Craig Robinson has been looking for from him. Joining Cunningham in the starting lineup for the Beavers is junior center Joe Burton (10.5 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 6.3 APG), sophomore guard Ahmad Starks (9.5 PPG, 2.5 RPG and 2.3 APG), sophomore forward Devon Collier (16.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG) and junior center Anqus Brandt (9.5 PPG, 2.8 RPG). Coming off the bench for the Beavers playing the sixth man position the highly touted sophomore guard Roberto Nelson (5.0 PPG, 3.0 APG). Joining Nelson coming off the bench senior forward Kevin McShane, sophomore forward Eric Moreland and freshman guard Challe Burton.

Trends:

- Vanderbilt 13-5 ATS their last 18 non-conference games.
- Vanderbilt 1-3-1 ATS their last 5 games at a neutral site.
- Vanderbilt 2-5-1 ATS their last 8 games overall.
- Oregon State 15-5-1 their last 21 non-conference games.
- Oregon State 4-0 ATS their last 4 games at a neutral site.
- Oregon State 25-5-1 ATS their last 31 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

Final Thought:

Vanderbilt has an extremely talented team that has a group of veterans that want nothing but to go out as a winner in their final season. The problem for Vanderbilt is the game they lost this season to Cleveland State they had problems stopping the talented guard play that Cleveland State produces. Now the Commodores have to try and contain a top notch guard in Jared Cunningham and 3 point specialist in Ahmad Starks.

Oregon State has the size and the backcourt to match up with Vanderbilt in this matchup. If the Beavers can continue to get dominate play from their backcourt this will cause problems for the Commodores who could be looking at their second loss on this early season.

The line on this game is pretty much correct since Vanderbilt is a top 20 team and predicted by many to be higher. I personally thought this line would have come out a bit higher but after that win against Texas, Oregon State seems to be getting respect from oddsmakers.  I still though think this might be a tad high for a team that will match up with Vanderbilt in all aspects of this game.

Pick:

Oregon State +8.5
