The beginning of the PGA golf season has been remarkable. Phil and Tiger were paired in the final group at Pebble Beach and Phil thumped him. Then, the following week, Phil made birdie on 18 at Riviera to force a 3 man playoff in the Northern Trust Open. All the while, if you had shopped for value, this golf season could have been very profitable for bettors.
Mickelson was 22:1 when he won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Last weekend, Bill Haas won the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club at 50:1 odds. So let’s take a look at early odds for this weekend’s Accenture Match Play Championship match-ups.
Not to state the obvious, but remember the Accenture event is a match play event. This is the PGA Tour’s equivalent of March Madness; it’s a bracket format that matches two golfers against one another with the winner advancing and the loser going home. Players are seeded and the #1 player squares off against the #16 seed in each of the four brackets. The four #1 seeds are Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood.
The opening round match with the biggest favorite? Well, that’s Tiger Woods of course. Tiger is (-205) in his match against Gonzalo Fdez-Castano. ¬†Sergio Garcia (-200), fresh off a an impressive final round at the Northern Trust, is the second biggest favorite in the first round in his match with The Mechanic, Miguel Angel Jimenez.¬†Luke Donald, the reigning Accenture match play champion, is a (-190) favorite against Ernie Else in his opening match.
